Silica crystal litter is made from amorphous silica gel — the same material found in those small sachets packed with electronics and shoes to absorb moisture. In litter form, it absorbs liquid extremely rapidly and locks odours inside the crystals without releasing them back into the air.
One of the biggest advantages of silica litter is longevity. A single tray can last a single cat two to four weeks before needing full replacement, compared to the daily scooping required with clumping clay. Simply stir the crystals daily, scoop out solids, and add fresh crystals as needed.
Silica litter is lightweight, low-tracking, and virtually dust-free. Some cats need a short adjustment period as the crystals feel different underfoot compared to clay. If your cat is reluctant at first, mix with a small amount of their existing litter to ease the transition.
