Guinea pigs (cavies) have one critical nutritional requirement that sets them apart from most other small animals: they cannot synthesise vitamin C and must receive it daily through their diet. Without adequate vitamin C, guinea pigs develop scurvy — a painful, debilitating condition. Fresh leafy greens high in vitamin C (bell peppers are particularly high and most guinea pigs love them) must be part of the daily diet.
Like rabbits, guinea pigs also need unlimited timothy hay for digestive and dental health. Our guinea pig range covers hay, species-appropriate pellets with added vitamin C, fresh food supplements, vitamin C drops, spacious cages (guinea pigs are social and should ideally be kept in pairs), and fleece bedding liners.
